06/20/09 Car Wash I at Panera Bread

Cougar Kendo's first car wash was a success! Mark Sensei 'chaperoned' while members of the club worked and burned under the sun. In addition to raising a couple hundred of dollars, the club received many honks and whistles, along with a few phone number requests. Also, special thanks to Jennifer Maza, the sister of Nancy and Yaya, who stayed all day to help the club.

Cougar Kendo did extremely well for it's first taikai. The club was able to send 8 competitors: Shamina Chang, Michael Harris, Peter Lee, Robert Lott, Neal Nesbitt, Chris Nguyen, Nancy Maza, Andrew Tatuaka, and 4 helpers: Judy Lin, Marci Moseley, Radha Patel, David Tran to Dallas. Half of the competitors were able to win their first match; three proceeded to win their second; and one member, Nancy Maza, proceeded to win her third, with a very bloody toe as a souvenir. Congratulations to Nancy for receiving a fighting spirit award!

01/25/09 Mochitsuki

Last Sunday, the advisor, Nakamoto-sensei, and a couple of the members of Cougar Kendo were initiated into the tradition of Rice Pounding, Mochitsuki, at the Houtson Budokan. Fresh out of automatic mochi machines, Kendo members and guests of the dojo had only mallets and a mortar to pound the pounds of glutinous rice into paste. During the labourious pounding, people were able to drift over to the tables filled with pot luck goods. (Kerstein-sensei's Tortilla soup did not survive the onslaught by the hungry.) Luckily, only the mallets involved in the pounding suffered any injury, which were minor.

'08-'09 Winter Break
Cougar Kendo was far from being inactive during winter break. At the dojo they were able to keiko, learn how to hit a tire with a suburito, keiko with with bokuto, survive boguless jigeiko with Craig sensei, blow up balloons for some balloon shiai, and help at the annual dojo clean up (followed by good food at Carlos').
